FAQ
Common questions.
How is this different from a shop-bought gumshield?
A shop-bought boil-and-bite gumshield is softened in hot water and you bite into it yourself to shape it. A Setanta Gumshield is made from a digital intra-oral scan of your own mouth, individually designed by a dental laboratory, laboratory manufactured, and professionally fitted and checked before it is issued.
Where does the scan happen?
Either at our clinic in Crinnage, Craughwell, Co. Galway, or at your own club or team facility if you're scanning a squad.
Does the scan hurt or make you gag?
No. There's no putty or impression material involved. The digital intra-oral scan takes a couple of minutes and most people find it far more comfortable than a traditional impression.
How do I look after my gumshield?
Rinse it in cold water after use, and clean it with a soft brush and mild soap. Never use hot water, as heat distorts the fit. Dry it and store it in its case, away from direct sun and heat.
How long does a gumshield last?
It depends on how much wear it gets and, for younger or growing players, how their mouth changes over time. Check the fit regularly and replace it if it no longer sits the way it should or shows signs of wear.
What colours and designs are available?
A choice of available colours and designs, including club and team colours for squads.
Can you kit out a whole club or team?
Yes. We work with GAA clubs and teams, scanning either at our clinic or at your own club or team facility. Groups of 15 or more players get a discounted rate of €70 per player, and every player is still individually scanned and fitted.
